Kids Spending more time with Media and Mobile Gadgets

A recent survey of children’s utilization of mass media technology, cell phone, computers and television indicates the amount of time allocated to these devices has increased to over 7 hours daily. This does not include time multitasking when children will use more than one device at a time.

Research on behavioral correlates of such behavior is not conclusive, but there are studies that suggest a relationship between obesity, behavioral issues, and even some problems with interpersonal skills and time spent engaged in such pursuits.

The major question is what effect will increased time spent using digital media activity have on the behavior and brains of children over time. Research does indicate a relationship between passive pursuits and dementia later in life. Research also indicates too much stimulation can retard brain development. These represent the critical questions to be explored and answered in the near future. More studies are being done and are needed to determine what the short term and long term effects are on children.

It is important to remain open minded yet critical about both the negative and positive effects of children using and relying on the cell phone and other devices to socialize, interact, and stimulate mentally. The evolution of such technology has already found the youth of the world and they are more reliant and comfortable with it than previous generations. This evolution cannot be stopped and it probably should not. It is important for society to integrate this new way of living in healthy ways.

    I have spoken to many kids and teenagers abiut this issue, what I felt is that, there are multiple aspects of this behaviour of kids. Some of the kids have huge peer pressure, they want to be like their geeky friend(s).Some of the kids’ Parents have peer pressure, they want to compete with other parents, in turn they give more gadgets to kids, eventually spending very less time with kids themselves. Some of the Parents provide gadgets for kids, so that kids cant accuse their parents are too busy and negligent. And some of the kids are genuinly inclined towards “Technology”. I believe, we should tell kids that its perfectly ok if they cant compete their friends in technology. Even a grown-up person, cant know-all-the-gadgets..however hard he/she tries. Rather than, kids must also focus on sports, cognitive and brain exercises, social behaviour, meditaion, yoga as well.

    I agree COMPLETELY!! As a teacher(and mother!) I have seen the peer pressure that is rampant in today’s schools. It is the man-up-manship at work!! I would love to see/read a profesional psychologists’ opinion on this…

    Motion generates a more active brain according to my reading of the scientific materials brought up in the popular press. The body has to learn how to interact with the environment and generally speaking sports provides this movement. I would if at all possible restructure a household so that children are not being babysat by virtual realities and that would include books.

    Passive pursuits leads later to dementia? Stamp collecting, coin collecting, chess playing, bridge…what the subject remains is screened, a.k.a. virtual reality. And of course we now have an immediate generation to work with…boomers as the first wave of television raised children.

    Balance is important. Meeting and talking face to face, playing outside with others, using technology to research and learn and stimulate the mind for positive things. Children have to incorporate all of these things around the use of their gadgets.
