Hummus is a Mediterranean staple that is rich in B vitamins and Omega-3s, nutrients that are essential to brain health!  Hummus is made out of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are healthy fats that will keep your brain nourished and focused.  Hummus is great as a study or work snack as it’ll help your brain remember things easier and stay concentrated.  Hummus also has no sugar and relatively little sodium, which is a bonus to maintaining a healthy diet as well!

Lemon Garlic Hummus

Serves: 1-4

What you Need:

  • 3/4 cup olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 cups chickpeas, drained
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Whole wheat pita bread, cut into wedges

Putting it all Together:

  • In a blender, combine the oil, lemon juice, beans, garlic and salt.
  • Cover and process until smooth.
  • Transfer to a small bowl and serve with whole wheat pita wedges!

The Brain: Attention & Concentration

Attention is the most basic and necessary function of the brain. The brain can attend to information from five sensory pathways. While a deeper level of processing is not necessary for attention to occur, it is also true that a deeper level of information processing cannot occur without normal attention. The brain stem and frontal lobe are thought to be important for basic attentional processing. The entire Cortex is likely involved to a degree with basic attention.

Caloric Restriction and Memory

We have known for some time that caloric restriction relates to longevity and functional health in animals. This has been well documented and discussed in previous blogs from Fit brains. However, the issue of whether caloric restriction also benefits humans has been less clear. It’s also obvious and important to note how difficult caloric restriction can be for humans, particularly when such reduction in calories is significant.

Much work is done on the quality of what is consumed when one reviews the many dietary plans offered on the market. Less is focused on the quantity and it is generally true that those living in western nations over-consume. This has resulted in an alarming increase in obesity and diabetes, including a significant number of cases emerging in childhood.

The balance of sugars and insulin in our bodies is very important. An unhealthy balance can lead to diabetes and multiple other medical problems, some of which affect the brain such as stroke and dementia. We now know that what we eat affects both the structure and function of our brain and more attention is now focused on both the quality and quantity of our diets.
